A Simple Exercise to Have More Gratitude and Feel Happier

If I said to you “Do this exercise for 7 days and you will be a happier person” – would you?

All it will take, is 5 minutes a day.

Well, why wouldn’t you?

This exercise has been taken from Martin Seligman’s book, “Flourish”

Seligman suggests, we think too much about what goes wrong during our lives, and not about what goes right.

Understanding how we can learn from bad events is great, too much dwelling can lead to anxiety and for more serious cases, depression.

And typically, we don’t spend enough time, appreciating the better parts of our days.

The “Three Blessings” or “What Went Well” Exercise

Step 1 – Relive Your Day

Take three minutes (perhaps whilst brushing your teeth), before you go to bed, to relive the day in your mind and have three of your strongest positive moments ready to write down.

Step 2 – Write the 3 things in your diary, journal or calendar

For example:

  1. My sister had her baby today
  2. I made myself a healthy breakfast
  3. I volunteered to chair our weekly work meeting

Step 3 – Write next to each one, what made that happen?

  1. My sister had her baby today
    • She looked after herself and I supported her through her pregnancy
  2. I made myself a healthy breakfast
    • I did a healthy food shop and got up 10 minutes earlier
  3. I volunteered to chair our weekly work meeting
    • I took the initiative and pushed through my comfort zone

Initially, it might feels strange to do this – but I can vouch, that after a week of doing this – it becomes more natural and gets easier to do.

As Seligman adds, “The odds are that you will feel less depressed, happier, and addicted to this exercise six months from now”.
